Heat vs bio-chemical: an honest comparison
"And heat treatment — isn't that better?" We hear it often, and it's a fair question. Heat has an excellent, well-earned reputation in certain cases. But it's neither the only serious option nor always the best one. Here's how both methods really work, no sales pitch.
Heat treatment: how it works
The principle is simple and formidable: heat the entire dwelling above 50 °C for several hours using industrial heaters and fans. At that temperature, bed bugs die at every stage — eggs included — within tens of minutes. No chemicals, no residue.
Its advantages are real:
- Total knockdown in one shot: heat penetrates everywhere air circulates — mattresses, furniture, cracks.
- No products: appealing for people very sensitive to insecticides or particular environments (some daycares, for example).
- Speed: one day is usually enough for the treatment itself.
But it has serious constraints:
- Price: commonly two to four times the cost of a targeted treatment. The equipment is heavy, the energy use enormous, the crew large.
- Preparation: everything heat-sensitive must leave — electronics, artwork, plants, cosmetics, medications. That's half a day of hauling before you even start.
- Material risks: at 50 °C and above, some vinyls warp, glues give way, musical instruments suffer. A serious operator protects things, but zero risk doesn't exist.
- No residual protection: heat leaves nothing behind. If a bug wanders back from the neighbouring unit the following week — common in old plexes — you're starting over.
Targeted bio-chemical treatment: our standard protocol
This is our everyday method, and the one we recommend first. The principle: precise application of professional bio-chemical products directly into hiding spots — cracks, baseboards, bed frames, outlets, window surrounds — where bed bugs live and travel, instead of treating the whole dwelling blindly.
The full protocol has three pillars:
- 1. Targeted application by a technician who knows the insect's habits: we treat travel routes and harbourages, not random walls.
- 2. Certified bed bug encasements, which you fit yourself on mattress and box spring with our guidance: they trap remaining bugs and protect the mattress long-term. See our encasement guide.
- 3. The follow-up visit: we come back to check. Eggs hatch over several weeks — follow-up is what separates true eradication from a breather.
The products are professional low-toxicity formulations once dry, applied locally — no "bug bomb" fogging the whole apartment. You leave for a few hours while it dries, and that's it.
Honest comparison
- Effectiveness: both methods eradicate an infestation when properly executed with follow-up. Heat hits harder in one shot; targeted bio-chemical compensates with precision, product residuality and encasements.
- Price: targeted bio-chemical costs a fraction of heat — that's its main advantage, and why it's our standard. Right now it's the most effective treatment at the best price in Canada: results comparable to heat, at a fraction of the cost.
- Disruption: a few hours away vs. a full day of moving heat-sensitive belongings out.
- Aftercare: bio-chemical leaves residual protection; heat leaves none.
When do we recommend heat?
For severe, entrenched infestations — heavy clutter, multiple rooms saturated, or situations where chemical sensitivity rules products out. In those cases we'll tell you honestly that heat is the better tool, and we offer it as an option. For the large majority of infestations we see in Montreal, Laval and Longueuil, targeted bio-chemical with encasements and follow-up gets you to zero bed bugs for far less money.
Not sure which you need? That's exactly what the $75 inspection is for — waived if you proceed with treatment.
Good to know
In one shot, yes — nothing survives 50 °C. But eradication isn't one shot: it's precision plus follow-up. A well-executed bio-chemical protocol with encasements reaches the same endpoint for most infestations, at a fraction of the price.
Typically two to four times more: heavy equipment, huge energy use, larger crew, plus your preparation time. Get both quotes in writing before deciding — and beware anyone who only sells one method.
The professional formulations we use are low-toxicity to humans once dry, and we apply them locally into harbourages — not broadcast across the room. You stay out a few hours while it dries; pets too. We'll walk you through the exact precautions.
Our $75 inspection answers that: we assess the infestation's extent, the dwelling type and your constraints, then recommend honestly — including heat when it's genuinely the better option.
Which treatment do you need?
Inspection: $75 — waived if you proceed with treatment.
